Krokodille Zoo
I have mixed feelings about this place.
The biggest plus is the collection itself. From a species perspective it’s extremely strong. Having nearly every species of crocodilian, including some very rare ones, together with rare turtles and other reptiles, makes this a genuinely unique collection.
I’m glad I visited now, when they have both the larger outdoor park and the newer tropical greenhouse. Those additions make a big difference. The older parts of the zoo, however, are not very impressive to me. They feel small, dated, and quite outdated overall. If I had seen something like this as a private collection, I would probably have been impressed, but for a public zoo the old sections feel cramped for both animals and visitors.
The outdoor areas and the new tropical hall are much better, although we didn’t spend much time outside because of heavy rain.
One thing I really didn’t expect was the extreme heat and humidity, both in the old indoor sections and in the new tropical hall. Maybe the bad weather made it more noticeable, but this is easily the warmest and most humid collection I’ve ever visited. Even breathing felt heavy at times, and neither we nor my camera handled it particularly well. I was very glad I had spare clothes in the car afterwards 😅
That said, it’s obviously great conditions for the crocodiles and other reptiles.
Overall, this is a place you visit for the species. The collection itself is excellent, but the older infrastructure holds it back. With the newer additions it’s clearly moving in the right direction, and from a species collector perspective it’s absolutely worth seeing at least once.
