Marint Kunskapscenter i Malmö
This is a rather small facility, so small that I’m not even sure it really counts as a collection. But they do keep a few animals, so I suppose it qualifies. It’s the Marine Education Center in Malmö, opened in 2018 and located right on the beach. The main focus here is education, especially about local marine life.
They have a handful of aquariums. Some house more permanent residents, and one is a special “daily catch” tank that shows whatever they’ve recently collected from the shore. The daily catch usually consists of crabs and shrimp, but sometimes fish appear as well.
My trip to Sweden wasn’t only about photography and adding new species to my lists. It was also about documenting smaller collections that have little to no information available online, even when they don’t offer any real “lifers”. This place fits exactly into that category.
There’s nothing extraordinary on permanent display, but the daily catch means they could occasionally turn up something more interesting. Some of the species you can see in the regular aquariums include round goby (neogobius melanostomus), two-spotted goby (gobiusculus flavescens), corkwing wrasse (symphodus melops), and black goby (gobius niger).
Overall, this is not a destination aquarium. It’s a small educational stop focused on local species, best visited if you’re already in the area. For me, it was mainly about having seen it and documenting what’s there.
